Frequently Asked Questions

  • An OCI is a semester-long, project-based experience where a team of 3–5 BYU Marriott students partners with your organization to solve a real business challenge. Students dedicate around 7–9 hours per week to deliver professional recommendations and results.

  • Submit a project proposal outlining your company’s needs or goals. Our OCI coordinators will review your submission, help refine the scope, and match you with a qualified student team for the semester.

  • Projects can cover a wide range of areas — market research, business strategy, data analysis, operations, HR, finance, or marketing. The most successful projects have clear objectives, defined deliverables, and data or access the student team can work with.

  • Sponsors provide project direction, access to needed information, and meet with student teams weekly or biweekly (virtually or in person). You’ll offer feedback and guidance while BYU coordinators oversee logistics and team progress.

  • No. OCI sponsorship is completely free. BYU manages the program and student coordination — your only investment is time and mentorship.

  • Each team is supported by an OCI coordinator or faculty advisor who ensures quality, professionalism, and progress. You’ll stay informed throughout the semester and receive midterm and final updates.

  • Each team provides a final presentation and written report summarizing their research, analysis, and recommendations. Many sponsors use these deliverables to inform strategy or implement improvements.

  • Proposals are accepted before each semester (Fall, Winter, and occasionally Spring/Summer). To ensure a good match, submit your project at least 2–3 weeks before the semester begins.

  • Reach out to David Hollan, Director of On-Campus Internships, at dhollan@byu.edu. He can help you craft a project proposal and guide you through the sponsor process.
