What is the Master of Public Administration?

Administered through the George W. Romney Institute of Public Service and Ethics, the Master of Public Administration (MPA) program is designed for individuals passionate about devoting their careers to public and nonprofit service. Students develop a unique skill set preparing them to effectively serve and lead in both their personal and professional lives.

BYU Marriott MPA students are defined by their desire to make an impact; they are passionate about service, finding innovative solutions to community problems, and enhancing their leadership abilities.

Whether their objective is to become a city manager, lead a nonprofit organization, work in the federal government, improve healthcare, or analyze public policy, students in the BYU Marriott MPA program are empowered to make a difference in the world.

Two program options are available for students to complete their BYU Marriott MPA degree. The full-time MPA program enables students to earn the degree in two years. Full-time MPA students may also apply for our JD/MPA program, which offers a joint law and MPA degree.

Program Breakdown

The full-time MPA program is a fifty-eight-credit, two-year program. Students gain a broad, conceptual understanding of the public sector while developing specialized skills that enable them to contribute to their chosen field.

Students tailor their program of study to their interests and goals by selecting a public-sector emphasis and specializing in a chosen skill set. During their *first semester, students focus their studies on core classes. Students begin taking classes from their chosen sector and skill set in their second semester.
